5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide
5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide
Based on the Teaching of Pastor Terry Longmire | Christ Sanctuary Church
Theme: The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit
Day 1: The Holy Spirit Is a Person, Not a Force
Reading: John 15:26 | Ephesians 4:30 | 2 Corinthians 13:14
Devotional: It is easy to reduce the Holy Spirit to a feeling, a wind, or an invisible power source we draw from when life gets difficult. But Scripture calls him a person -- one who has a will, who fellowships with believers, and who can be grieved by the way we live. He is not a tool to be used. He is God to be known, honored, and loved. Consider today how you have been relating to the Holy Spirit. Have you been treating him as a force to call upon, or as a person to walk with? True relationship with God includes relationship with his Spirit. Invite him into your day not as a resource, but as a companion.
Reflection Question: In what areas of your life have you been grieving the Holy Spirit, and what would it look like to walk in step with him today?
Day 2: The Holy Spirit Empowers What We Cannot Do Alone
Reading: Exodus 31:1-6 | Judges 6:34 | 1 Samuel 10:6-7
Devotional: Throughout the Old Testament, God consistently chose ordinary people and filled them with his Spirit so they could accomplish extraordinary assignments. Skilled craftsmen built the tabernacle not on talent alone, but by the Spirit of God moving through their hands. Judges led nations into freedom not by military genius, but because the Spirit of the Lord clothed them. Saul was transformed from a fearful man into a king when the Spirit rushed upon him. The pattern is clear -- God's Spirit empowers people for assignments they could not accomplish through ordinary human strength alone. Whatever God has called you to, he has not left you to accomplish it on your own. The same Spirit who moved over the waters in creation is the Spirit who moves in you.
Reflection Question: What assignment or calling in your life have you been attempting in your own strength rather than depending on the Holy Spirit?
Day 3: You Must Be Born of the Spirit
Reading: John 3:1-8 | Romans 8:9-11 | 1 Corinthians 12:3
Devotional: Nicodemus was a religious man, educated and respected, yet Jesus told him plainly that none of that was enough. Salvation is not an intellectual achievement or a religious accomplishment. It is a supernatural, spiritual work that only the Holy Spirit can produce in the heart of a man or woman. The Spirit convicts us of sin, reveals the righteousness available in Jesus Christ, and opens our eyes to the kingdom of God. No one comes to saving faith apart from this work. If you have been born again, the very faith you exercised to believe was itself a gift worked in you by the Spirit. That is not a reason for pride -- it is a reason for deep and lasting gratitude.
Reflection Question: How does understanding that your salvation was a work of the Holy Spirit change the way you view your own faith journey?
Day 4: You Are the Temple of the Holy Spirit
Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 | Ephesians 1:13-14 | Romans 8:12-16
Devotional: People travel across the world to stand in places considered holy, sometimes spending fortunes to have an encounter with the divine. But the most holy place on earth is not a building, a mountain, or a city. It is the heart of a person in whom the Holy Spirit dwells. When you surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, the eternal God took up residence in you. You were sealed with the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of your inheritance. This truth carries enormous weight for how you live -- what you allow your eyes to see, what you speak over others, how you treat your brothers and sisters in Christ. The Spirit in you is not a casual guest. He is the eternal God, and how we live either honors or grieves his presence.
Reflection Question: If you genuinely believed your body was the dwelling place of God, what is one specific habit or pattern you would change beginning today?
Day 5: The Spirit Testifies -- You Are a Child of God
Reading: Romans 8:12-17 | Galatians 4:6-7 | Ephesians 4:4
Devotional: One of the most tender works of the Holy Spirit is the one described in Romans 8 -- that the Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. He places within us the cry of Abba, Father, drawing us not into a formal, distant religion, but into the intimate embrace of a Father who knows us completely and loves us fully. You are not a slave to fear. You are not defined by your past sins or your present failures. You are an adopted child of God, sealed by his Spirit, and held by his hand until the day you see him face to face. Let that truth move from your mind down into your heart today. The Spirit is testifying it over you right now.
Reflection Question: What fears or feelings of unworthiness have been keeping you from crying out to God as your Father, and how does the witness of the Holy Spirit speak directly to those fears?
