5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide

5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide
Based on the Sermon "Consider the Farmer" by Pastor Terry Longmire -- Christ Sanctuary Church

Day 1: Remain Under the Weight
Reading: James 5:7-8; Hebrews 10:36-38
Devotional: The Greek word for patience in James means "to remain under." It does not mean to simply grit your teeth and endure. It means to stay planted beneath the weight of your circumstances without running, without shrinking back, without abandoning your post. The farmer does not dig up the seed every other day demanding to see progress. He trusts the process. Whatever you are waiting on God to move in today -- a marriage, a prodigal child, a body that needs healing, a prayer that seems unanswered -- your assignment is faithfulness. God's assignment is the harvest. Remain in the faith. He will do everything He has said He will do.
Personal Reflection: What area of your life are you tempted to abandon before the harvest comes? Write it down and surrender it to God today.
Practical Application: Identify one promise from Scripture that speaks directly to what you are waiting on. Write it somewhere visible and speak it aloud every morning this week.

Day 2: The Condition of the Ground
Reading: Hosea 10:12; Jeremiah 4:3; Psalm 51:10-12
Devotional: Before a farmer can plant a seed, the ground must be broken. Hard, unworked soil cannot receive what is meant to grow in it. The same is true of the human heart. Sin hardens us. Pride hardens us. Bitterness, disappointment, and even hollow religious routine can leave our hearts calloused and unable to receive the truth of God's Word. Repentance is God's plow. It is not punishment. It is preparation. When God breaks up what has become hard in us, He is not destroying us. He is making room for something living. A broken and contrite heart is not a weak heart. It is a prepared heart, ready for the seed of the gospel to take root and grow.
Personal Reflection: Ask the Holy Spirit honestly: Is there any hardness in my heart right now? Bitterness, unconfessed sin, or disappointment that has quietly built a wall between you and God?
Practical Application: Spend ten minutes in quiet, unhurried repentance today. Do not rush through it. Let God plow deeply. Then receive His forgiveness as described in 1 John 1:9, where the promise of cleansing is extended to all who confess.

Day 3: You Are a Laborer in the Field
Reading: Luke 9:62; Colossians 3:23-24; Matthew 9:37-38
Devotional: Ministry does not belong only to those who stand behind a pulpit or on a platform. The moment God changed your heart, He placed a field in front of you -- a specific portion of ground that only you can plow. There are teenagers in your life who need to see what a life surrendered to Christ actually looks like. There are hurting people in your circle who are getting all of their answers from the world because no one who knows Jesus has yet shown up for them. There are young believers who need someone to help them put down deep roots. God has placed you in their lives on purpose. Put your hand to the plow and do not look back.
Personal Reflection: Who has God specifically placed in your field? Name them. Pray for them by name today.
Practical Application: Reach out to one person in your life this week with no agenda other than to encourage them. Let God use that simple act as the beginning of something eternal.

Day 4: We Need the Rain
Reading: Joel 2:23, 28-29; Acts 2:1-4, 14-21, 41
Devotional: The farmer understands that his labor alone cannot produce a harvest. He can plow faithfully. He can plant with care. But without rain, the ground stays dry and the seed stays dormant. The early church did not rush out to preach immediately after the resurrection. Jesus told them to wait. Wait for the promise. Wait for the power. Wait for the rain. And when the Holy Spirit fell on the day of Pentecost, three thousand souls were added in a single day. Not because of a program or a polished presentation, but because God opened the heavens. We need that same rain today -- the kind that brings genuine conviction, true repentance, and lasting fruit that no human effort alone could ever produce.
Personal Reflection: Are you relying more on your own effort than on the power of the Holy Spirit in your daily walk and ministry? Be honest before God today.
Practical Application: Set aside time this week specifically to pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit -- in your own life, in your church, and in your city. Do not fill the time with requests alone. Wait in His presence. Listen.

Day 5: Press On to Know Him
Reading: Hosea 6:3; Acts 1:4-8; Romans 8:16-17
Devotional: Hosea 6:3 carries one of the most beautiful invitations in all of Scripture. It declares that if we press on to know the Lord, He will respond to us as surely as the dawn arrives and the spring rains fall. His coming to us is not uncertain. It is as reliable as the turning of the seasons. You are not just a servant waiting on orders. You are an heir. You have an inheritance in the harvest of God's kingdom. That inheritance changes everything -- how you view your daily work, how you treat the people around you, how you pray, how you endure, and how you give. Press on to know Him. The rain is coming. The harvest is real. And you have a part to play in it.
Personal Reflection: Do you truly live with the awareness that you are an heir of God's kingdom? How would your daily life look different if you did?
Practical Application: Begin each morning this week with this single prayer before anything else: "God, whose heart have you placed in my field today? Use me." Then watch how He answers.
